Eleven Minutes Into a Design Doc, Your Transcriber Stops

You're explaining the settlement architecture at 11pm, voice flowing, hands free, when the tool cuts you off. Free tier exhausted. The next design doc decision either gets typed out (slow), dictated in fragments later (fragmented), or abandoned until tomorrow (lost). This is the real cost of capped transcription.

The New Word Bottleneck

The work changed faster than the tools adapted. Five years ago, developers typed code. Fingers on the keyboard. Now you type intent.

Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, they all work the same way. You explain what you want. The model builds it. Your bottleneck isn't keystroke speed anymore. It's specification writing. Design docs. PR descriptions. Incident postmortems. Long-form explanations of what the code should do. The model can't do that work until you hand it the context.

That's the same work that used to happen in meetings. Now it happens in prose, solo, late at night, with no one to interrupt you mid-thought.

Voice is faster for this. You speak at 140 words per minute. You type at 60. The delta is engineering time. But that speed only matters if the tool doesn't cut you off mid-sentence.

The Arbitrage of Free Tiers

Most cloud transcription tools charge like this: Wispr Flow is $14 a month with a free tier capped at 2,000 words. Willow charges $12 with a similar cap. Superwhisper is $8.49, also capped. The cap is intentional. It's the paywall.

What that really means: the company built distribution costs into the pricing, not the technical cost. Transcription happens on your device (if it's local) or on their server (if it's cloud), but in both cases, a trained model is processing speech. The variable cost is nearly zero. Your $14 pays for the business, not the technology.

Some builders accept that trade. You need better support, or seamless cloud sync, or tighter IDE integration. Fair. That's worth money.

But if you just need transcription that doesn't cut you off, you're paying for the wrong thing.

Why Local Matters Now

Recitey runs speech-to-text locally. Whisper-large-v3, the model that sits on your device, reaches 96.3% word accuracy on LibriSpeech. No cloud call. No word counter. No cap. The technical cost is zero because your device does the work once and keeps doing it.

This is not a feature. It's an architecture choice, and architecture shapes everything.

It means you can dictate a 12,000-word design doc in one flow. No fragmentation. No switching to Notion and manually typing the rest. No coming back to it tomorrow and losing the thread. Voice → clean prose → inbox.

The reason other tools don't do this is distribution, not capability. Transcription models have been free for years. OpenAI released Whisper in 2022. But free-tier + local-only doesn't build a SaaS revenue stream. It doesn't create lock-in. It doesn't justify the Series A pitch.

The Code IP Question

Marcus, a backend engineer at a fintech in Stockholm, refuses cloud transcription. Not because he types faster, but because of code IP. When you dictate a design doc that contains database schemas, API endpoints, or settlement logic, that audio and transcript leave your device. Even if the company deletes it after processing, it traveled. It was stored. It could be logged.

This matters more for some teams than others. Fintech has compliance rules. YC companies don't want to brief competitors. Open source maintainers are fine with public design work. But the option to keep code-related thinking local, that's worth something, and cloud tools don't offer it.

The Rewrite Tax

Here's what Marcus used to do with cloud-capped transcription: he'd start a design doc in Cursor. Dictate into a capped tool. Hit the limit at paragraph three. Switch to the transcript editor and type the rest manually. Later he'd rewrite it all into a more professional tone. The rewrite took 12 minutes.

With uncapped local transcription, the flow doesn't break. The transcript comes out clean enough that he sends it to a code rewrite model in Claude and it lands polished, in his voice, in under 2 seconds. No manual touch-up. No tab-switching. No momentum loss.

The difference isn't just convenience. It's whether you can actually think at full speed while your hands are free.

When to Choose Something Else

Local-only transcription is not a universal win. If you need real-time translation to another language, cloud makes sense. If you want your documents to sync across devices instantly, local-only is friction. If your main use is voice calls (customer support, sales), you probably want a tool like Otter that's built for that workflow, not one that's optimized for written specification.

This tool is for the developer who spent the last two years explaining intent to code models, who notices they speak faster and clearer when hands are free, and who's tired of breaking their thought into fragments because the transcriber ran out of free quota at an arbitrary word count.

The Catch

There's always a catch. What you're not paying for with a free tier is cloud rewrite. The raw transcript comes out accurate, but it's not always shaped like prose. Commas in weird places. Your speech patterns in text. That's where professional writers and polishing models come in, and that's the part you might pay for.

But the core skill, turning speech into words without a word limit, that's free and local.

The old decision was: pay for transcription, or don't. The new decision is: do you want distribution and lock-in, or do you want the model to work the way you actually work?

One of those scales better than the other.
