When the Word Cap Kills Your Design Doc

You're at 11pm finishing a design doc about payment settlement edge cases. The thinking's flowing. You've got the architecture clear in your head, edge case handling for reconciliation delays, retry logic for failed transactions, timeout windows for clearing. Cursor's tab-complete is catching your intent before you finish the phrase. Wispr charges $14/month for uncapped access. Willow charges $12/month. Both offer free tiers, capped at 60 seconds or 10 minutes per month, deliberately designed to frustrate you into paying. Even Superwhisper ($8.49/month, the indie alternative) has monthly caps.

But here's the structural issue: a design doc, a PR description, a Slack thread explaining a critical bug investigation, these aren't quick voice memos. They're long-form writing. The old productivity frame, "voice is faster than typing", misses what actually changed in developer workflow. The bottleneck isn't keystroke speed anymore. It's never been about keystroke speed. The bottleneck is now prompt and spec writing. You're explaining architectural intent to models. You're writing design rationales that Claude or Copilot will read. You need to dictate 1,000 words of technical thinking without stopping to hit a usage wall.

Why the cap isn't a technical limit

If you're a developer who uses voice to explain architectural intent to models, uncapped local Whisper isn't a feature. It's the only sensible architecture. Everything else is a compromise waiting to interrupt you mid-thought.
